Have you seen him?
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood mighty seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!” -Isaiah 6:1-3
The interesting thing is that Isaiah had already been preaching and prophesying since Chapter 1 even though he hadn't yet really "seen" the Lord.... Nor was he really "cleansed" or "sent". It wasn't until chapter 6 that the Prophet has this life-changing vision of the Almighty....The throne where the Lord is seated is high and exalted which represents His eternal, sovereign, universal rule. He is high above every other king yet He is very concerned about His people (you and me). He is so concerned that He humbled Himself very low (to the lowest actually, and became a human being and assumed the position of a bondservant, which is the lowest possible in society at the time [Philippians 2] (wild, who will go for us? He Himself would ultimately go v8 ). Not only did He leave His exalted position and humble Himself, but Christ physically suffered for our sins and DIED (1 Peter 3:18; 4:1; Isaiah 53). (How can God die? By truly becoming human and choosing to do so, revealing His great love towards us!!!!!) Since God is eternally holy and cannot change, and we are not (we've all sinned), God chose to have Christ literally take our sin upon Himself! Jesus lived a perfect life without sin and became our perfect sacrifice (2 Cor 5:21)!
Also note that seraphim are extremely strong and mighty angelic beings who serve God and perpetually cry out in praise..... They cry out saying: Holy, Holy, Holy, 3 times which intensifies the idea or understanding of God's Holiness to the highest level... All of our human pride is mocked by the behavior of these angels. They know that in the presence of God there is no room for pomp, no reason for pride like King Uzziah began to have after God blessed him 2 Chr 26:16-23 (interesting that Isaiah had this vision the year King Uzziah died).... And then the seraphim, who are literally continually burning for God, say: The whole Earth is FULL of His glory. What is glory? It's magnificence. Honor. Distinction. Eminence. Splendor. Majesty. Beauty. Fame. Prestige. And much more. Our God is a glorious God. All the oceans, Islands, animals, sky, stars, humanity and all that we see display His glory, wisdom and omnipotence…. Read Psalm 19 for more on that.
Anyway, what is our practical response to Isaiahs galvanizing vision of the Lord? In verse 5, Isaiah said, "I am undone! I am unclean. I am filthy. All so true! We are just like Isaiah. Filthy and sin-FULL before the Lord of Hosts! But because of the redemptive work of Christ, our hearts have been touched and cleansed!
“Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” -Hebrews 9:12-14
“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace!” -Ephesians 1:7
So really, what can we do, in view of God's greatness, grace and mercy?
1. Worship & Adoration- Read Revelation 4:8-11; Revelation 5:8-14
2. Humility- Read Philippians 2:1-16
3. Surrender & Service- Romans 12:1-2; Isaiah 49:1-6
Additional Scripture to meditate on: Ephesians 1:3-5; Ephesians 2:4-9; Daniel 7:9-10; Isaiah 57:15; Hebrews 12:22-29
“Andrew desires to see people saved, encouraged, and empowered by the mighty God who loves them. He ultimately writes to help people form a deep and lasting relationship with God.”
